For the first year, Life is Beautiful and Red Bull BC One will host a break dancing battle presented by Beat Fever over the three-day weekend. Thirty-two of the best B-boys and B-girls will compete individually for a $1,000 prize. The competition is hosted by b-boy veteran Ronnie Abaldonado, a member of Supercr3w and Full Force, who was recently featured on NBC’s World of Dance.
“To have B-boys from across the country here in Las Vegas is rare, and for them to experience the Downtown culture that we have been cultivating for so many years will be something special,” Abaldonado says.
The competition takes place inside Downtown’s Container Park. On September 22, any Life Is Beautiful attendee will get the chance to participate in a dance workshop—maybe learn how to triple backflip?—followed by a practice cypher at 8 p.m. The bracket-style tournament kicks off on September 23; losers will get a second chance in a consolation round. Each set will be judged by Abaldonado, BC One All Star RoxRite and Flexum from Knucklehead Cali crew. The final round takes place on day three, when the champion will be announced during a special presentation.
There are still two coveted spots up for grabs. On September 16, a pre-competition one-on-one battle will take place in the Arts District to fill the final spots.
“B-Boys represent a big part of the hip-hop culture,” Abaldonado says. “And because this festival brings diversity, this competition will add value [to the] experience.”
